2025 promises to be a big year for the artificial intelligence segment. While AI-powered services have generally advanced fairly rapidly, the last few months have brought powerful and advanced options with impressive capabilities. Multiple chatbots and platforms have received agentic features, for example. The next big step before reaching true AGIs seems to be improving memory capacity. Google has confirmed that Gemini will enhance user understanding thanks to the ability to remember past chats and other improvements.
The upcoming improvements to Gemini were confirmed by Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs and Gemini. A post on X/Twitter said the chatbot will have a better memory and learn about you through your activity on other Google services. The latter seems similar to what Meta AI does—according to Zuckerberg’s company—with information obtained from Meta’s social platforms.
Google Gemini will be able to remember past chats with you
Google’s movement appears to be a response to OpenAI’s announcement of similar improvements. ChatGPT’s parent company recently said that the AI chatbot will be able to remember past conversations to offer better-tailored and more relevant outputs. That said, Google had recently teased a version of Gemini with increased memory capacity. At the time, that version was only available internally to the development team. However, these capabilities were expected to come to the public version at some point.
“It starts by knowing your past chats (launching soon),” Woodward said.
Gemini will learn everything about you through your use of Google services
The other big improvement Gemini will receive will be the analysis of your usage of other Google services. The AI-powered chatbot will be able to collect and analyze data about your use of Google services such as Gmail, Calendar, Search, and YouTube, among others. This will allow it to have more “context” about you, offering even more personalized responses. “We’ll make it easy for you to bring in all of your Google context,” Woodward said. The improvement, called “pcontext,” will allow Gemini to learn more about you over time.
Basically, while Gemini’s core functionality will be the same for everyone, the responses will be tailored to the user of a particular device or account. So, each person will have a “unique” version based on their habits. Woodward says the improvements will make Gemini more “personal, proactive, and powerful.”
Potential privacy concerns
Perhaps the fact that Gemini will have access to usage data from other Google services is a privacy concern for you. However, Google says that Gemini will explicitly ask for your permission to access this data.
There’s no date yet for the rollout of the Gemini improvements. We’ll likely get more details at the Google I/O 2025 event on May 20.
