For years, Samsung has relied on certain camera technology to differentiate its “Z Fold” devices from the rest. More specifically, the company has opted for UDC (under-display camera) for a true full-screen experience. However, a new leak confirms we’ll see a significant camera design change for the next-gen model. The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 won’t feature any UDC (under-display camera) technology.
Galaxy Z Fold 7 could opt for a punch-hole instead of UDC on the inner display
We just shared a set of exclusive renders of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. One thing that stood out notably in the images was the presence of a traditional front-facing camera even on the inner display. Well, now reliable tipster PandaFlash on X/Twitter has backed up our report. According to the post, both the outer (cover) display and the large inner foldable display on the Z Fold 7 will integrate their front-facing cameras using the familiar punch-hole design, much like traditional smartphones. Interestingly, this approach was also seen on last year’s Galaxy Z Fold SE (Special Edition).
According to previous reports, the Z Fold 7 will boast the same display as the Z Fold SE. The main difference is said to be thinner bezels that would enhance the full-screen experience. It seems that Samsung has failed—or hasn’t wanted—to integrate UDC into this panel.
Pros and cons of this decision
On the “pro” side, the biggest benefit is likely better image quality for the inner display’s selfie camera. While UDC technology allowed for an uninterrupted screen, it inherently caused a loss in image fidelity due to the display material covering the lens. By switching to a punch-hole, Samsung can use more conventional, higher-quality camera sensors. This results in sharper and clearer selfies and video calls from the main foldable screen.
However, there’s a notable “con”: the camera hole on the inner display will now be fully visible. This will be a bummer for those who loved the seamless, distraction-free experience of a true full-screen display on previous Fold models. Even if the UDC area was sometimes faintly noticeable, the new punch-hole might feel like a step backward.
Previous Galaxy Z Fold models did incorporate UDC for the inner foldable display. However, it was a Samsung technology never quite perfected. Users often noted the aforementioned loss of image quality in selfie photos. Additionally, the specific area of the screen hiding the camera sometimes showed subtle distortions or discrepancies in resolution compared to the rest of the display. The latter issue could be distracting under certain lighting conditions or under certain angles.
The specific reasons behind Samsung’s decision are unknown. It could be a cost-saving move or a move to prioritize better image quality from the front camera. Either way, prepare to see a permanent “black dot” on your Galaxy Z Fold 7’s foldable display.
