Mediocre camera quality on affordable Galaxy smartphones could soon be a thing of the past. It looks like Samsung is gearing up to bring optical image stabilization (OIS) as a significant camera upgrade to one of its most affordable upcoming devices: the Galaxy A17. This feature could seriously elevate the photography experience on the budget-friendly phone.
OIS is a technology designed to tackle blurry photos due to shaky hands. It physically adjusts the camera lens to counteract those tiny movements, resulting in noticeably sharper and clearer pictures. The effect of OIS is noticeable under any conditions, but especially when the lighting isn’t perfect or when you’re trying to hold your phone steady. Currently, the Galaxy A26 is the most affordable OIS-equipped Samsung handset available on the market. But if the rumors are true, the Galaxy A17 could be the first in Samsung’s super-affordable Galaxy A1x series to boast it.
Samsung Galaxy A17’s camera tipped to get OIS as big improvement
Historically, Samsung Galaxy devices are known for their camera quality. However, this feature was exclusive to flagship models. To address this, the South Korean giant started rolling out OIS to more affordable ranges. For example, the A5x series first got it in 2021 with the Galaxy A52. The A3x and A2x families had to wait a bit longer, with the Galaxy A33 and A23 getting OIS in 2022. However, since then, the humble Galaxy A1x devices have been waiting to be the next in line. Well, after several years, the wait is almost over.
According to reports from Korea, Samsung is exploring potential cost-effective OIS solutions for the Galaxy A17. This is necessary so that the improvement doesn’t impact the phone’s price. The company could integrate hybrid OIS as one of the alternatives, for example.
If these whispers turn into reality, the Galaxy A17 could offer a photography experience that punches well above its weight. The inclusion of OIS would be great news for potentially millions of users. After all, the Galaxy A1x devices are quite popular around the world. Taking good photos will no longer be exclusive to expensive models.
