Four killed, 44 injured in Russia’s largest drone strike on Ukraine since war began

Four killed 44 injured in Russias largest drone strike on

At least four persons were killed and more than 44 injured after Russia on Sunday launched its largest drone strike on Ukraine since the war began in 2022, using 805 drones and decoys, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Moscow also fired 13 missiles during the attack, AP reported.

The Ukrainian Air Force said that it intercepted 747 drones and four missiles, the news agency reported.

However, nine missiles and 56 drones struck 37 locations across the country. Debris from intercepted weapons also fell on eight sites, AP reported.

Zelenskyy said in a social media post that first responders and emergency services were still dealing with the aftermath.

A government building in the capital Kyiv was also damaged in the strikes, BBC reported. Russia has so far avoided targeting government buildings until now, according to AP.

“For the first time, the government building, roof and upper floors have been damaged due to an enemy attack,” BBC quoted Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko as saying. “Rescuers are extinguishing the fire.”

Sunday’s attack was the second mass Russian drone-and-missile strike on Kyiv in the past two weeks.

The attack came even as European leaders have been pressing Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war, after 26 of Ukraine’s allies pledged to deploy troops as a “reassurance force” for the war-torn country once the fighting ends, AP reported.

Earlier, Zelenskyy had said he was ready to meet Putin to negotiate a peace deal and urged United States President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Russia to push it toward ending the war.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, triggering the most deadly conflict in Europe since World War II.

Moscow claims it is a special military operation that is necessary to prevent Kyiv from being used as a platform for Western aggression. But Ukraine and its Western allies say it is an imperial-style war of occupation.
