The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted bail to former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress MLA Partha Chatterjee in a case about alleged irregularities in the 2016 teacher recruitment process, PTI reported.
Justice Suvra Ghosh directed Chatterjee to surrender his passport, not leave the jurisdiction of the trial court, and refrain from holding any public office while the trial is pending.
Chatterjee was arrested in July 2022 by the Enforcement Directorate.
He has been accused of involvement in a scam that allegedly facilitated illegal appointments of unqualified candidates as primary school teachers, assistant teachers and to other posts in the state education department.
Chatterjee was the state education minister in 2019, when government jobs were allegedly given to candidates in return for money instead of candidates who had qualified in the recruitment process.
The case came to light after several unsuccessful candidates in the Teachers’ Eligibility Test conducted by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education approached the High Court.
On June 8, 2022, the court ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the allegations. The CBI registered a case the next day, after which the Enforcement Directorate filed a case on June 24, 2022, naming several office-bearers of the education department.
