
Parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Odisha received heavy rainfall on Tuesday and recorded flooding in several areas. Incessant rains also led to flooding in Punjab and a landslide in Arunachal Pradesh.
In Jammu’s Reasi district, five persons were killed and 14 injured in a landslide on the route to the Vaishno Devi temple atop the Trikuta hill on Tuesday. Several persons were also fear trapped under the rubble.
“In an unfortunate incident of landslide at Adhkwari, five people have lost their lives and 14 others have been injured,” the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board said on X. “Rescue operations are underway.”
The pilgrimage to the temple was suspended after the landslide that occurred at around 3 pm, PTI reported.
Separately, three persons have died in the past three days due to rain-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier on Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for very heavy rainfall in several districts in the Jammu division, including Poonch, Reasi, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Udhampur, Doda and Kishtwar.
The weather has triggered landslides and led to several roads being closed.
Doda Deputy Commissioner Harvinder Singh told ANI that three persons have died so far in rain-related incidents in the district. Two of the deaths were reported in Gandhor and one was in the Thathri subdivision, he added.
The area has recorded heavy rainfall for three consecutive days, especially in areas along the Chenab river, added Singh.
“Reports of cloud bursts have come from two places,” the deputy commissioner said. “National Highway 244 has also been washed away in a cloud burst. Our team is busy restoring that.”
Singh added that 15 houses, along with cow sheds, had been damaged. “A private health centre has been damaged,” he said. “Three footbridges have been washed away… The highest flood level of the Chenab river is 900 feet, and currently it has already reached 899.3 metres.”

Officials have limited the movement of persons near the Chenab river and the adjacent roads, the deputy commissioner said, adding that locals have been shifted to safer locations.
Almost all the rivers and streams in Jammu were flowing above or close to the danger mark, unidentified officials told the Hindustan Times. They added that several low-lying areas and roads in the city had been submerged.
The Jammu divisional commissioner said that the water levels of the Basantar, Tawi and Chenab rivers were currently at an “alert level” amid medium to heavy rainfall forecasted in the division for the next 40 hours.
“As precautionary measure, residents & visitors are strongly advised to stay away from riverbanks & flood prone areas,” the authorities said on X.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that the situation in several parts of Jammu was “quite serious” due to heavy rain and added that he had directed the administration to be on high alert.

Himachal Pradesh
In Himachal Pradesh, heavy rainfall has triggered landslips and flash floods at several places, PTI reported. No deaths have been reported since Monday, unidentified officials told the news agency.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert in Kangra, Chamba and Mandi districts on Tuesday.
Strong currents of the Beas river washed away a multi-storey hotel and four shops in Manali in Kullu district, officials told PTI, adding that the Manali-Leh highway had been blocked at several points.
In Mandi district, two buildings with about 40 shops collapsed in the Balichowki area on Monday night. Kanvi in Kinnaur district was also hit by flash floods.
Several district administrations ordered the closure of educational institutions.
The weather agency has predicted heavy rain in the state for the next 24 hours, PTI reported.
On Monday, the State Emergency Operation Centre said that 795 roads were closed in the state, and about 956 power supply transformers and 517 water supply schemes had been disrupted.
At least 156 persons have died in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh between June 20 and August 25, PTI reported, citing data from the State Emergency Operation Centre. The state has also recorded 77 flash floods, 41 cloudbursts and 81 major landslides so far.
The data also showed that the state has incurred losses to the tune of Rs 2,394 crore due to rain-related incidents.

Odisha
In Odisha, more than 170 villages in Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts were submerged for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, PTI reported.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert in Koraput and Malkangiri on Tuesday. The weather agency also predicted heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha till Friday amid a fresh low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal, The Hindu reported.
“Jajpur district has been severely hit due to a breach on the embankment of Kani river, a tributary of Baitarani river,” PTI quoted state Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari as saying. “I am going to the affected areas in Jajpur.”
Pujari added that relief and rescue operations were being conducted in full swing in the affected districts. The minister said that residents had been evacuated and sheltered in relief camps in all the affected districts.
The Subarnarekha and Baitarani rivers were flowing above the danger level at three places, The Hindu reported, quoting unidentified officials from the state Water Resource Department.
Punjab
In Punjab, incessant rains in the past two days have worsened the flood situation in Kapurthala district, PTI reported. In Ferozepur, residents of villages along rivers have started evacuating.
The Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and seasonal rivulets are in spate due to heavy rainfall in their catchment areas and the release of surplus water from the Pong and Bhakra dams, according to the news agency.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced the closure of all schools in the state till Saturday in the wake of heavy rainfall.
Arunachal Pradesh
In Arunachal Pradesh, a landslide between Sapper Camp and Nyukmadung in Dirang severely disrupted movement along the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang National Highway, India Today reported.
No deaths were reported. However, several vehicles were damaged due to the debris.
