FIRs against Tejashwi Yadav in Maharashtra UP for allegedly derogatory

A first information report has been filed against Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh for making allegedly derogatory social media posts about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On Friday, the Maharashtra Police registered an FIR against the former Bihar deputy chief minister for posting allegedly “highly offensive, false and defamatory” content about Modi on social media, reported The Indian Express.

The case was registered at a police station in Gadchiroli following a complaint by Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Milind Ramji Narote.

Narote, who represents the Gadchiroli constituency, said in his complaint that BJP workers told him about the posts by Yadav, in which he called the prime minister a “liar” and accused him of making false promises.

Narote said that one of the posts also included a song that claimed the prime minister “lies morning and evening”.

“This act is not merely against an individual but is an insult to the office of the prime minister of India and the honour of the nation,” Narote said on social media. “Such posts clearly aim to create confusion, discontent, and tension in society.”

The Shahjahanpur Police in Uttar Pradesh also registered an FIR against Yadav based on a complaint filed by BJP’s city unit chief Shilpi Gupta, PTI reported.

The news agency quoted Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi as saying that Gupta alleged in her complaint that Yadav’s “indecorous comment” about Modi had caused “immense anger among the people of the country”.

The FIR alleged that the social media post “created significant resentment among the general public and the BJP workers”, PTI reported.

In the FIR filed in Maharashtra, Yadav was booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to the use of words, signs or electronic communication to promote hatred or ill-will, acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony, making repeated derogatory or defamatory statements against the government with intent to cause public mischief, causing public mischief and attempting to spread disharmony or hatred through speech or digital platforms, The New Indian Express reported.

In the case registered in Uttar Pradesh, Yadav was booked under BNS sections pertaining to spreading rumours and making allegations through a picture.

The social media posts by Yadav came on the day Modi visited Gaya in Bihar, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several projects, ANI reported.

On Saturday, Yadav asked who was afraid of an FIR and said that those who fear the truth are the ones filing such cases, ANI reported.

“Saying the word ‘jumla’ has also become a crime,” he told the news agency. “They fear the truth… We are not scared of any FIR and we speak the truth.”

The controversy came ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections that are expected to be held in October or November.
