FIR filed against social media handles that made ‘derogatory comments

The Karnataka Police have filed a case against several social media handles that allegedly made derogatory comments about Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, PTI reported on Saturday.

The cyber crime wing of the police filed the case on September 3 in connection with the remarks, made in the backdrop of President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Mysuru in Karnataka.

At an event at the city’s All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Siddaramaiah asked those present on the dais, including the president, whether they understood Kannada, as he was speaking in the language, according to PTI.

When a video of the event was shared online, several social media users accused the chief minister of disrespecting the president, and allegedly made abusive remarks about him.

A person with the Facebook account Hanuman Bhakta asked: “Hey [Siddaramaiah], you asked the President if she can speak Kannada, do you know her Oriya language?” The question was allegedly followed by expletives, The Times of India reported.

Six persons made derogatory comments in response to the post, the police said.

The case has been filed under the Information Technology Act and under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to acts intended to outrage religious feelings and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, The Times of India reported.
