In a candid conversation with Filmfare, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui opened up about his approach to playing villainous characters in films. Known for his intense and nuanced performances, Nawazuddin shared how he brings depth to roles that might otherwise be seen as purely negative.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui explained, “I have played the role of 4–5 villains, but I have not played the role of a villain as a villain. He is a human being, you can say. You can have a perspective of calling him a villain, but this is not his perspective. Everyone in the world has the same problem of right and wrong. Everyone is trying to be right and everyone is trying to be wrong. This is the problem in the whole world. So, the villain you are talking about, he says, I am not a villain, this is my philosophy. You should think about it.â€
Nawazuddin Siddiqui emphasized the importance of human qualities in every character. “If I already know that my character is a villain, then there will be no human qualities in it. Before there were villains, there were separate villains. There was a separate hero. There was no such thing as a grey shade. There is no such thing as a person with only good qualities or only bad qualities. I have not met a person in the world who has all the good qualities and all the bad qualities. We are all the same,â€Â he said.

By taking this approach, Nawazuddin Siddiqui ensures that his characters feel real and relatable, rather than just caricatures of evil. He believes that every person, whether seen as a hero or villain, has a mix of traits, motivations, and struggles that shape their choices.
This insight into his craft highlights why Nawazuddin continues to be one of the most respected actors in Indian cinema. His ability to humanize every character, even those on the darker side of the story, allows audiences to see multiple layers of personality and morality.
