The Federal Bureau of Investigation has placed a massive bounty of $10 million for providing information regarding the “Salt Typhoon”, a highly sought-after Chinese hacking group. Last year, the group infiltrated the highly sensitive networks of multiple US-based telecommunication providers, as well as the US Treasury. The FBI’s official statement mentions that it will offer relocation assistance and other compensation to those who provide info on the hacking group.
The FBI is seeking public help to gather any info on Salt Typhoon hackers
On Friday, the FBI urged the public to share any information that could help identify the individuals behind the Salt Typhoon hacking group. It is seeking help from anyone to obtain any details about the hacking campaign or the group’s operations targeting the telecommunications sector. The FBI announced its aggressive commitment to identifying, mitigating, and disrupting the malicious cyber activities of the hacking group.
“Investigation into these actors and their activity revealed a broad and significant cyber campaign to leverage access into these networks to target victims on a global scale,” the FBI said in its announcement.
From the wording of the FBI’s announcement, the $10 million bounty reward stretches beyond Salt Typhoon and into other hacking groups that attacked US critical infrastructure firms. These rewards would likely also cover Volt Typhoon, another China-based hacking group targeting the same victims.
The Salt Typhoon hacking group has been active since at least 2019
Multiple cybersecurity firms and authorities link the Salt Typhoon group to several breaches of carriers worldwide, including those in the US. The group has been active since at least 2019. Notably, The Wall Street Journal reported one of the largest attacks attributed to the group last October. At the time, the group reportedly hacked networks belonging to Verizon, AT&T, and Lumen/CenturyLink.
The latest FBI investigation found that the Salt Typhoon hackers had breached networks, stolen call data logs & private communications of victims, and copied a ton of information under court-ordered US law enforcement requests. Besides, a report in February suggested that the Salt Typhoon group continued its attacks against telecom operators. They breached up to five telecoms between December 2024 and January 2025.
