The Trump administration has abruptly suspended all new student visa interview appointments globally effective May 27. Signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the directive freezes scheduling for F-1 or academic, M-1 or vocational, and J-1 or exchange visitor visas. Students mainly use these visas to study in the United States. The pause is intended to give the US State Department time to expand its screening of students’ activity on social media. According to officials, the suspension is meant to be temporary and does not apply to applicants who already had visa interviews scheduled. The pause is likely to create bottlenecks at US consulates in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi, which processed a record 140,000 visas for Indian students in 2023 alone. Video: PTI.
