Malavika Mohanan speaks exclusively to Filmfare’s Editor-In-Chief Jitesh Pillai about her acting journey in the South industry, her debut film Pattam Pole with Dulquer Salmaan and bagging a significant role in Iranian filmmaker’s film Beyond The Clouds starring Ishaan Khatter. Malavika goes on to reflect about her learnings from successful stars like Rajinikanth, Thalapathy Vijay and further shares the various advices given to her by directors. She also talks about growing up in a film-oriented family with her parents – renowned cinematographer K.U. Mohanan and Beena Mohanan – and how her worldview about cinema was shaped by the exposure she received at home. Mohanan mentions how she chose to stay with her parents till today and not move out, as that keeps her emotionally stable and safe.

The Thangalaan actor shares her experience of working with actor Vikram and learning a traditional martial arts for her role in the film – the most challenging role in her filmography so far. She recalls her first meeting with actor Mammootty and how he encouraged her to give acting a chance and the rest is history. Furthermore, the actress shares some unfair practices within the industry, from casting privilege to directors favoring male actors – she mentions the hurdles she faced while making her way in the industry.
