Empuraan advance booking day 1: Mohanlal-Prithviraj Sukumaran actioner sets pre-sales record; eyes biggest worldwide opening for a Malayalam film | Malayalam News

Empuraan advance booking day 1: With just six days remaining for the worldwide release of actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s third directorial venture, the Mohanlal-starrer L2: Empuraan, expectations are at an all-time high — so are the pre-sales. While all quarters predict that the film will easily deliver the biggest worldwide opening for a Malayalam movie, the question now is whether Empuraan will emerge as the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time. Nonetheless, its impressive pre-release business, particularly in the overseas market, indicates that achieving this milestone won’t be a herculean challenge, provided the film meets audience expectations.

Advance bookings for the film’s opening day began in Kerala on Friday and BookMyShow, India’s leading entertainment ticketing platform, saw record-breaking sales in no time. According to co-producer Aashirvad Cinemas, Empuraan set a new benchmark in Indian cinema by registering the highest hourly pre-sales on BookMyShow, with 96,140 tickets sold per hour. Notably, ticket sales in several key markets outside Kerala have yet to open, and once they do, the figure is expected to cross the one-lakh mark almost immediately.

Meanwhile, the film’s overseas pre-sales have also been phenomenal, with worldwide advance bookings already crossing the Rs 12 crore gross, a record for a Malayalam film in the international market, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. The film is also expected to deliver the biggest opening in Malayalam cinema history, with an estimated worldwide gross of Rs 40-50 crore, more than double the current record held by Mohanlal’s Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham (Rs 20 crore).
