The 2025 Emmy Awards successfully raised $350,000 for the Boys and Girls Club after host Nate Bargatze’s pledge to donate $100,000, with the condition that winners’ acceptance speeches be 45 seconds or less. Bargatze started Sunday’s awards show by sharing the challenge of finding a method to ensure winners’ speeches stuck to the designated time limit. He said, “Honestly, give your speech. I know how hard you guys have all worked to get here. I’m not trying to take anything away. Forty-five seconds. That’s what you got. And if you want to do more than that, do it on social media later. More people are gonna see it there anyway.”

He then shared that he would be starting the show by contributing $100,000 to the Boys and Girls Club, a gesture that was warmly received with applause. He continued, mentioning that a deduction of $1,000 would be applied to the overall sum for each time a person’s allotted speech time exceeded 45 seconds. He said, “If you stay 45 seconds, it stays at $100,000. It’s brutal. What you gonna do though? I can’t change it. This is a game I made up and these are the rules.”

The first-time Emmys host mentioned that the show would include an additional $1,000 for each speech lasting less than 45 seconds. However, at the beginning of the show, he asked about the duration of Seth Rogen’s acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Comedy Series from The Studio, which was indeed shorter than the specified time limit.

As Bargatze regularly checked in about the fundraising progress, JB Smoove brought two young representatives from the Boys and Girls Club on stage, serving as a reminder to the nominees of the importance of their contributions. “Nate, this is the most amazing idea I’ve ever seen. You are truly an amazing host tonight. And these 45 seconds — whew! I love it,” he said before reminding the crowd to “zip it” if their speeches were exceeding 45 seconds.

During their acceptance speeches, many winners acknowledged the donation. Upon receiving the Award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Hannah Einbinder, the star of Hacks, mentioned she would “pay the difference” when she realized her speech was running long. Later in the program, Rogen and Evan Goldberg concluded their acceptance speech for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series for The Studio by saying they had finished their speech within 45 seconds. While presenting the award for Outstanding Live Variety Special, Tina Fey informed Bargatze that she would “pay for the time” after making a joke.
