Eight killed in Chhattisgarh floods heavy rains continue in northern

Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab continued to receive heavy rainfall for the third consecutive day on Thursday. Several highways remained blocked in the states.

In Chhattisgarh, eight persons have died amid floods, triggered by heavy rainfall, in the Bastar division, PTI reported. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday directed officials to extend all possible assistance to the families affected by the floods.

According to a government statement, Sai, who is on a visit to South Korea, held a video conference with officials and collectors in flood-hit Bastar, Dantewada, Bijapur and Sukma districts and reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures.

In addition to the eight persons, flooding in the region had killed 96 livestock, said state Revenue Minister Tank Ram Verma, reported PTI. About 495 houses and 16 culverts and bridges were also damaged.

On Wednesday, an unidentified official said that more than 2,000 persons had been evacuated after incessant rains over the past three days triggered flash floods, inundating vast areas in the region.

Verma said that the situation had started improving on Wednesday night.

The road from Bijapur to Dantewada has opened, the minister added.

“The flooding of a culvert near Chhindgarh between Jagdalpur and Sukma has disrupted vehicular movement,” PTI quoted Verma as saying. “It is likely to be restored by tonight. The Sukma-Konta road will also be opened once the water level reduces on a culvert there.”

Jammu and Kashmir

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for traffic for the third consecutive day on Thursday due to several landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the Udhampur-Ramban belt, PTI reported.

About 500 to 600 vehicles are stranded at various places due to the closure of the highway.

The officials also said that the 270-km-long stretch linking Kashmir with the rest of the country was blocked by multiple landslides at several places between Jakheni and Chenani in Udhampur.

“Highway is closed for vehicular movement from Jakheni in Udhampur towards Srinagar due to damage at several places between Jakheni and Chenani,” a traffic police official said. “No vehicular movement shall be allowed from Nagrota in Jammu towards Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, Srinagar.”

Himachal Pradesh

In Himachal Pradesh, the Chandigarh-Manali highway was closed due to a landslip in Banala, The Hindu reported. Restoration work was underway.

The State Disaster Management Authority on Thursday said that the “continuous torrential monsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh have led to the blockage of 534 roads, while 1,184 electricity distribution transformers have been disrupted”, ANI reported.

The authority also said that the death toll in the state due to landslides, flash floods and house collapses had risen to 310.

Punjab

The flood situation remained grim in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur and Amritsar districts in Punjab, The New Indian Express reported.

The district administration, along with the Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force, continued relief and rescue operations.

Southern India

In Kerala, the rains intensified, leading to waterlogging and a rise in water levels of the dams, PTI reported. Landslides were also reported in parts of the state.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

The weather agency also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall for parts of Telangana and Karnataka.
