Hyderabad: 732 Booked for Drunk Driving in Weekend Crackdown

Hyderabad: In a weekend crackdown on inebriated driving, traffic police from the Cyberabad and Hyderabad commissionerates registered a total of 732 drunk driving cases between Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5. The action is part of a broader initiative to curb traffic violations and enhance road safety across the city.

105 Cases in Hyderabad Commissionerate

In Hyderabad, 105 individuals were caught driving under the influence of alcohol in areas falling under Abids, Chikkadpally, and Saifabad traffic police stations. All offenders were produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Nampally.

The court imposed a total fine of ₹2,39,000. Of these:

  • 75 individuals were fined ₹2,100 each,

  • 12 individuals were fined ₹3,100 each,

  • 1 offender was sentenced to court rising (detention until court rises) and fined ₹3,300,

  • 17 individuals were sentenced to imprisonment along with fines totaling ₹41,000.

627 Cases in Cyberabad Commissionerate

In Cyberabad, traffic police booked 627 cases, including:

  • 458 two-wheelers

  • 39 three-wheelers

  • 116 four-wheelers

  • 14 heavy vehicles

Of the offenders:

  • 548 had Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) between 35 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml,

  • 48 offenders had BAC levels between 201–300 mg/100 ml,

  • 31 individuals had extremely high BAC levels between 301–500 mg/100 ml.

It is important to note that the legally permissible BAC limit in India is 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

Strict Legal Action Under BNS

Police have reiterated that anyone found driving under the influence of alcohol and involved in a fatal accident will face stringent legal action under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This section deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and the punishment includes up to 10 years of imprisonment along with a monetary fine.

Authorities have urged citizens to avoid driving after consuming alcohol and to opt for safer alternatives like designated drivers or cab services.
