For over two decades now, RuneScape has continued to let the genre of MMORPGs flourish. The game has drawn millions of players into its imagination and all things evolving around its world, skill progression, and lore depth. In a surprising, yet welcome turn of events, Jagex is taking the much-loved franchise in a new direction with RuneScape: Dragonwilds.
The game will be an online multiplayer survival crafting RPG set amidst the untamed wilds of Ashenfall, a long-lost continent teeming with wonders for the players to explore. Dragonwilds will come out of early access in Spring 2025 and attempt to redefine the legacy of RuneScape with new mechanics available to both veterans of the series and new players alike.
The Untamed Lands of Ashenfall
Dragonwilds doesn’t fit the usual mold in terms of story settings: Varrock? Nope. Falador? Uh-uh. Dragonwilds brings players to the long-lost continent of Ashenfall: a frontier wilderness abandoned by the footsteps of civilisation centuries ago. There is an abundance of Anima in the air, an elemental manifestation of magic that spreads through the place; be it creature or terrain, it warps the forms as it does.
Towering statues and remnants of lost civilisations feel like voices that once called towards such a mysterious past. A wild, infested forest by dragons, stretching volcanic wastelands, and threatening mountains are components of survival, which could not have been dramatized better by RuneScape itself.
Survival Meets Magic
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is built on the premise of a co-op survival exploration adventure and adds to the classic RuneScape elements of exploration, crafting, and combat. Players will have to hunt, gather, and craft their weapons, shelter, and magical enhancements with which to withstand the wilderness.
Unlike standard RuneScape magic systems, Dragonwilds introduces Anima-powered abilities, allowing players to shatter stone with a snap, summon spectral tools to aid in crafting, or manipulate the environment to their advantage. Each survival experience is unique, thanks to these magical enhancements that foster dynamic interactions with the world.
The Rise of the Dragon Queen
At the heart of this threat to Ashenfall is the immortal Dragon Queen herself, a once-legendary creature now awoken from her slumber to disorder the land. To vanquish her minions and eventually confront that epic finale, players are to unite, unravel ancient mysteries, and forge legendary weapons.
Be ready for some epic moments where boss battles will be set to be dramatic, with earth-shattering destruction, Anima-powered attacks, and coordinated ambushes with dragons, all promising to bring it.
Making It Мore Player-Driven
As Dragonwilds enters into Early Access, Jagex has placed strong emphasis on community feedback with regard to the game. Players will get a chance to take in all the mechanics and new content that becomes available and to suggest improvements, making Dragonwilds feel much more like a true RuneScape experience with modern innovation in its features. Already, the closed alpha testing has reworked combat balance, crafting depth, and some survival mechanics.
A Better RuneScape
The game, unlike its predecessors, seems to take a different approach to perspectives. The game seems to have adopted a third-person camera angle and has improved on the graphics while maintaining a similar design style. Not much else has been revealed to the community for now.
A deep-dive event is coming on April 15, 2025, when Jagex will showcase a lot of gameplay footage, the development insights, and hopefully an exact Early Access release date. However, fans eager to get into some Ashenfall presents can wishlist the game in Steam.
