Dr Sushrut Ghaisas, a consulting gynaecologist who had stepped down from his position at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital following the controversy over the death of Tanisha Bhise, has been given a security cover, Pune police officials said. Officials said that Dr Ghaisas had sought security following threats he had received.
The Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital was in the eye of a storm since Tanisha Bhise, who was in her seventh month of pregnancy, was allegedly denied admission over non-payment of a Rs 10 lakh deposit. Bhise later gave birth to twins at Surya Hospitals in Wakad, and due to complications was shifted to Manipal Hospital where she succumbed to irreversible brain injury. “Dr Ghaisas has been provided police security by an armed guard following his request. He had received threats.” a senior Pune police officer said.
Addressing the conference after the controversy, Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, medical director of Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital had said that threatening calls had been received as well as backlash on social media over the issue, due to which Dr Ghaisas decided to tender his resignation. Dr Kelkar had read out the resignation letter that said Dr Ghaisas was under tremendous mental pressure due to public outrage, threats and criticism.
Tanisha Bhise was the wife of Sushant Bhise who is a personal secretary of BJP MLC Amit Gorkhe. Bhise’s family members had claimed that Dr Ghaisas had sought a deposit ahead of the patient’s admission to the hospital. After her death, there were several protests at Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital. Meanwhile, a group of women workers of the BJP had vandalised the private clinic of Dr Ghaisas at the Ashwini Hospital in the Karve Nagar area.
