United States President Donald Trump on Saturday said that he was ready to impose fresh sanctions on Moscow if all members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization agree to implement their own punitive measures and stop buying Russian oil amid the Ukraine war.
NATO is a military alliance of 32 countries, including the United States and several members of the European Union.
Trump also suggested that NATO members consider imposing tariffs of 50% to 100% on China to help end Russia’s war on Ukraine. Beijing is a key importer of Russian oil.
The US and its European allies have imposed a series of sanctions on Russian businesses and exports since February 2022, when the war in Ukraine began, to force Moscow to end the conflict and sign a peace deal with Kyiv.
In recent weeks, the US president has repeatedly threatened to impose additional sanctions on Russia.
In a social media post on Saturday, which he described as a letter to all NATO members and the world, Trump described the purchase of Russian oil by some members of the transatlantic military alliance as “shocking”.
The trade weakens the group’s bargaining power over Moscow, the US president said.
He also said that NATO imposing tariffs of 50% to 100% on China for purchasing Russian oil, “to be fully withdrawn” after the conflict ends, “will also be of great help in ending this [war]”.
“China has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful tariffs will break that grip,” Trump said.
Trump has repeatedly alleged that import of Russian oil by countries, including India, was fuelling Moscow’s war.
In August, the Trump administration doubled the tariffs on goods imported from India to 50% for purchasing Russian oil. A 25% so-called reciprocal tariff had already taken effect.
At the time, New Delhi said that it was “extremely unfortunate” that the US had chosen to impose additional tariffs on India “for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest”.
