Discord has come up with a new way to reward users for a brief moment of their time in the form of ‘Orbs,’ an alternative form of digital currency within the Discord ecosystem. In the past year or two, Discord added both a shop and a rewards system that gave users extra incentive to spend more time within the app. The shop contains all kinds of ways to customize your profile with things like avatar decorations, profile backgrounds, and more. The rewards system is a bit more recent, allowing users to complete “quests” to gain things like unique avatar borders or in-game content.
What Discord is trying to do with Orbs is give users an alternative way to check out some of these features. While also giving the publishers/brands that offer quests an alternative reward for completing said quests. Discord is rolling this feature out in a beta, and it’s initially beginning with a small group of participants. The company says it plans to expand the feature to more users soon.
Discord Orbs can be used on items in the shop
If you’ve ever wondered how your friends ended up with that sweet, sweet profile avatar border and background, there’s a good chance it was from the shop. Of course, this is a shop, so things in the shop cost money. They’re relatively inexpensive and a solid purchase if you spend a lot of time on Discord and want some extra style for your profile.
That being said, it’ll still be nice to have an alternative way to pay. That’s what Orbs will do for you. You’ll be able to use them on Orbs-exclusive items in the shop, which means not only are you not spending real money, you’re also getting something unique.
Discord also says that Orbs can be used on Nitro subscriptions through the earning of Nitro credits. This is a great way for those who have never tried Nitro to give it a go without subscribing. As The Verge reports, you can earn three-day Nitro passes. There’s no mention of using Orbs to acquire enough Nitro credits to pay for a full month, however.
