Despite opening to mixed to poor reviews from all quarters, debut director Deeno Dennis’ Mammootty-starrer Bazooka continues to maintain a decent momentum at the box office, earning significantly better than the Malayalam megastar’s previous movie, director Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse. On its first Monday in theatres, the actioner recorded an India nett collection of Rs 1.49 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk, marking a dip of just 12.35 per cent from its Sunday earnings.
However, director Deeno Dennis recently revealed that there were deliberate attempts by some to defame the movie even before the completion of its first show. He also mentioned receiving messages claiming that the movie had bombed while the FDFS was still in progress. “On the first day, while we were watching the first show that commenced at 9 am, I started getting messages saying the film had flopped. I got really tense and started asking others if the FDFS had been completed anywhere else. Out of tension, I asked my cousin, ‘Shall we leave?’ He replied, ‘The movie isn’t over yet; you stay there.’ Among the messages I received were warnings telling me never to direct a movie again. I was even scared that I would get beaten up. It was only after we came out of the theatre that we got proper responses; they were good initially,” Deeno shared during a chat with Cue Studio.

After registering a domestic opening of Rs 3.2 crore on Thursday, Bazooka’s daily collection had dipped to Rs 2.1 crore the very next day, owing to poor responses. While the figure dropped further to Rs 2 crore and Rs 1.7 crore during the next two days, Bazooka managed to earn a decent Rs 1.49 crore on Monday, giving the movie some respite. While Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse (also released on Thursday) commenced its box-office run with Rs 1.75 crore, its earnings in the next three days were Rs 1.2 crore, Rs 1.65 crore and Rs 1.8 crore, respectively. However, both the movies’ collections are significantly lower than Mammootty’s last box office success, Vysakh’s Turbo (2024), which earned Rs 6.25 crore on its premiere day and Rs 2.3 crore on its first Monday.
While Bazooka’s global gross currently stands at Rs 19.4 crore, its domestic nett has reached Rs 10.49 crore. In his review of the actioner, SCREEN’s Anandu Suresh wrote: “Despite all its flaws, Bazooka becomes somewhat watchable only because of a dashing Mammootty, presented in the most dapper manner.”
