Apple is a company that loves to play it close to the vest. The company rarely confirms, let alone teases, products that they are about to launch. We may have been hearing rumors and seeing leaks about the iPhone 17 Air, but nothing has been confirmed yet. But now, the closest thing to confirmation is references made to the iPhone 17 Air in the iOS 26 beta.
iPhone 17 Air spotted in iOS 26
According to a Macworld report, the second iOS 26 developer beta contained hints that the iPhone 17 Air is indeed a real Apple product. One such hint is a new version of Apple’s iconic clownfish wallpaper. The latest version of the wallpaper has a resolution of “420×912@3x”. As the publication notes, there is currently no iPhone with such a resolution.
Further confirming their suspicions that this wallpaper might hint at the iPhone 17 Air is a report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo back in 2024. The analyst claimed that the iPhone 17 Air will feature a screen size of around 6.6 inches. It will also have a resolution of 1260×2740. This is pretty much identical to the wallpaper found in the iOS 26 beta.
Apple doesn’t mention the device by name in the beta, but this wallpaper is pretty strong evidence that a new iPhone is in the works. Whether or not it’s the iPhone 17 Air remains to be seen.
Apple’s new iPhone model
The iPhone 17 Air will be the first new model Apple has introduced to its iPhone lineup in a long time. The company has kept the lineup the same for the past few years. This includes the base model, the Plus model, and the Pro and Pro Max models. However, we hear that Apple could ditch the Plus model in favor of Air.
The Air will also be Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date. According to the rumors, we’re looking at a thickness of 5.5mm, while weighing 145 grams. We’ve also heard that the iPhone 17 Air is supposed to help set the stage for the company’s foldable iPhone, which is due in 2026. Apple will most likely announce its new iPhones this September. So, there’s still a few more months until we get official confirmation.
