The Indian recurve men’s team comprising of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai began their 2025 season with a silver medal after a 1-5 loss against Chinese team of Li Zhongyuan, Kao Wenchao and Wang Yan in the men’s recurve team final in the World Cup Stage 1 in Auburndale, Florida. The world number two Indian men’s team, seeded fifth in the tournament, had won the semi-final against eighth-seeded Spain earlier this week before losing against the third-seeded Chinese team in the final.
China shot first in the opening set, with all three archers shooting a 9 each with their first shots in the final. The Indian team too made a nervous start, with Bommadevara shooting a 9 followed by Rai shooting an 8. But Das shot a 10 to level the scores at the midway stage of the first set. Wenchao shot a ten off his second shot in the set followed by an 8 by Yan and 9 by Zhongyuan, leaving the Indians needing an achievable total of 28 or more to win the set. Bommadevara shot a 9, followed by Rai shooting a close 10, which was judged 9 first. But with Das shooting an 8, it resulted in a split first set, shared with one point each for both the teams. It would come back to haunt India.
The second set saw the Indian trio amassing 55 points off the six shots, with Bommdevara shooting two X-10s apart from Das shooting two 9s and Rai with 8 and 9. But the Chinese, who shot first in the set, came up with a near-perfect total of 58, including two 10s by Wenchao and Zhhongyuan, thereby taking the two points in the set and building a 3-1 lead in the final. Needing to win the third set to remain in contention in the final, the Indian team shot first and gathered a total of 54 points, including an X-10 and 9 by Das, apart from a 10 and 8 by Rai and an 8 and 9 by Bommadevara. The Chinese needed 55 or more to take the gold, and Yan’s 8 gave India a brief window of hope. But Wenchao and Zhongyuan both shot a 10 and 9 each and the Chinese team accumulated the required 55 points and took home the gold.
Rai, along with Yan, had the lowest shot average in the final with both the archers shooting 8.83 per arrow, but the Wenchao’s average of 9.67 and Zhongyuan’s average of 9.33 compared to Bommadevara and Das’s 9.17 meant that the Indian faltered at the final hurdle of the competition.
