India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared formation of a depression over east-central Arabian Sea early this (Saturday) morning, after a parent well-marked low-pressure area ended a hide and seek game over past two days.

The depression lay partially over south Konkan coast, 40 km north-west of Ratnagiri on Maharashtra coast. It is likely to move nearly eastwards and cross Konkan coast between Ratnagiri and Dapoli as a depression during the forenoon.

Anchoring monsoon

This will effectively take the system over interior Maharashtra even as it continues to anchor the monsoon flows from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal before a counterpart low-pressure area forms over the Bay in next 2-3 days.

businesslinehad already reported a possibility that the system may shift track eastwards (and not outwards into the sea, as expected earlier) towards interior Maharashtra, citing latest IMD numerical model predictions.

Intense convection

IMD satellite pictures showed intense to very intense convection, clouds and thunderstorms over Konkan, Goa, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala in the build-up towards onset of the monsoon expected anytime over Kerala and Karnataka coasts.

Clouds and thunderstorms farmed out also over south Vidarbha, north Telangana, central Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Lakshwadeep islands and moderate to intense convection over Chattisgarh, north Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Heavy rain alert

The Thiruvananthapuram Met Office has warned of widespread rainfall with heavy rainfall to very Heavy rainfall and extremely heavy falls rainfall at isolated places over the state for three days from today. An alert this morning said moderate rain with strong surface winds are likely over Alappuzha, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts until 10 am.

The Met Office added that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week while it would be heavy at isolated places over Lakshadweep for three days from today.
