The manager of an educational institute run by an ashram in southwest Delhi, who had been accused of sexually harassing 17 students, was arrested from Agra on Sunday, PTI quoted the Delhi Police as saying.

On Wednesday, the police said that searches were being carried out to arrest Chaitanyananda Saraswati, alias Parth Sarthy, who was absconding.

He was arrested from a hotel in Agra by a team of the Delhi Police.

The students, studying under the economically weaker section quota, had filed the complaint a month ago.

The matter came to light in August when one of the administrators of the institute complained to the police.

Saraswati was booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to sexual harassment, intention to insult the modesty of women and criminal intimidation.

He was also booked in a separate case for allegedly using a vehicle with a fake diplomatic number plate.

The police had registered the first information report in this case under sections pertaining to misuse of a property mark to defraud, cheating, forgery and creating false documents.

Earlier, the police froze 18 accounts and 28 fixed deposits, which had around Rs 8 crore in them, in the name of a trust set up by Saraswati, reported The Indian Express.

After the allegations came to light, the ashram said that Saraswati had “engaged in activities that are illegal, inappropriate” and claimed that it had “severed all ties with him”.
