Speaking at the National Conference on Environment, organised by the National Green Tribunal, President Droupadi Murmu reflected on growing up in the lap of nature in her village near Similipal forest in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. She said her parents used to collect firewood for cooking and her father always prayed to the trees. Her father, Murmu said, explained to her that the wood was dry now, but it had given fruits, flowers, water and clean air earlier and was of use even at the end of its life. She said her father would seek the tree’s forgiveness as it nourished creatures above and beneath the soil.

Amid the controversy over Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla rebuking Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his conduct in the House, a former presiding officer has sought justice for the Congress MP. P J Kurien, former deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha, said Gandhi should have been given an opportunity to explain his position. Kurien, in a Facebook post, pointed out that as per parliamentary proceedings, when the Speaker ‘names’ a member or admonishes the person, he or she has the right to explain his position. Kurien said it is also the norm that the LoP gets a chance to raise a point when he rises for one. “Unfortunately it seems that on many occasions this tradition has been violated,” said Kurien, adding that all concerned should respect the norms that are made by Parliament itself.

Family Events

Now onwards when the BSP will hold a public function, including programmes on birth and death anniversaries of social icons such as B R Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram, party leaders will have to participate along with their family members. The idea behind the directive issued by BSP president Mayawati is that if family members participate in such events, the party won’t have to make extra efforts to connect women and youths with its activities and ideology. Participation of families in BSP events will start from April 14, Ambedkar Jayanti.
