Several MPs who are members of the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) were in Srinagar on April 22, the day terrorists struck in Pahalgam. The PAC, headed by Congress’s K C Venugopal, was on a three-day study visit — April 21 to 23 — to Jammu and Kashmir under tight security cover. The committee, which is looking into CAG reports related to several ministries, visited Gulmarg and then Srinagar.
Change Of Plan
Leader of Opposition of Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Kashmir in the wake of the Pahalgam attack saw some last-minute changes after his team learnt that the injured persons admitted to Government Medical College in Anantnag had left for their homes after being discharged. Gandhi cancelled his visit to Anantnag and met one injured person admitted to an Army hospital in Srinagar. His meeting with J&K Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha was also advanced by an hour and was fixed for 3 pm due to the change in his schedule.
V for Valley
No bouquets changed hands, no victory slogans were chanted despite the BJP realising its aim of a “triple-engine sarkar” in the Capital after succeeding in the internal Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls on Friday. Party insiders said BJP councillors, whose votes propelled Leader of Opposition in the MCD Raja Iqbal Singh to the post of Mayor, chose to limit their celebration to a simultaneous flashing of the victory sign in light of the Pahalgam terror attack. As a gesture of peace, they presented saplings instead of the customary bouquets to the new Mayor when he entered the House.
