Last week, a two-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna adjourned a matter for May 5. One counsel, however, requested an early date, saying: “your Lordships will be under a lot of pressure” by May 5. The CJI, while agreeing to revise the date to April 29, added with a chuckle: “I will not be under pressure in any case”. The message was not lost on the counsel who quickly clarified that he only wanted the CJI to be relaxed. “I know coping with pressure is a natural thing but we want your Lordships to be totally relaxed,” he said, indicating that he only intended to convey that the CJI may be busy by then as he is retiring on May 13.

A recent speech by Congress MP from Lohardaga in Jharkhand, Sukhdeo Bhagat, impressed many within the party. Bhagat, who comes from a tribal community, has caught the eye of the Congress’s top leadership after his speech in Lok Sabha. Bhagat had spoken for 10 minutes in the Lower House on the railways, using several “catchy” slogans such as “Modi sarkar rail mein fail hai”. Bhagat, who is already part of the Joint Committee of Parliament on simultaneous elections, is likely to be given more opportunities to speak and represent the party, sources said.
