The CPI(M), a party known for sticking to conventions and traditions, seems to have decided to undergo a revamp to make itself more relevant. After electing M A Baby, a former MP and a former state minister, as the party general secretary, the CPI(M) has now changed the leader of its Rajya Sabha Parliamentary Party — senior leader from West Bengal Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya has been replaced by first-time MP from Kerala John Brittas — who has become the voice of the Left in Parliament with his fiery speeches and critical interventions. Brittas’ popularity on social media also seems to have played a role in his elevation. His maiden speech in Rajya Sabha in 2021 had won special praise from the then House chairman, M Venkaiah Naidu, too.
Building Bonds
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen making endearing gestures to two politicians at the Amaravati relaunch event in Andhra Pradesh on Friday. He was seen playfully twisting the arm of state minister Nara Lokesh and patting him on the back. Sources said the PM told Lokesh, who is Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s son, that he should visit him in Delhi. “Lokesh agreed to visit him with his family,” the source said. Later, sitting on the dais, Modi was seen giving candy to Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan. A source present at the event said, “Pawan Kalyan was coughing, so, the PM gave him cough drops.”
Welcome Back
BSP president Mayawati, who recently cancelled the expulsion of her nephew Akash Anand and gave him another opportunity to work in the party, is learnt to have asked the party workers to “encourage” the young leader in his endeavours. Sources said the directive has been issued as Akash currently does not hold any post or authority in the party and hence BSP functionaries are hesitant to meet him. The party is seeing the directive as an indication that Akash may soon get some major responsibility in the organisation. Before his expulsion in March this year, Akash was the national coordinator and successor of Mayawati; these two positions had projected him as the second-most influential leader in the party.
