Delhi Confidential: ‘A Good Man’ | Delhi Confidential News

There was some momentary bonhomie in Lok Sabha between the BJP and the TMC on Thursday. TMC MP Saugata Roy said he had decided not to move amendments to the Coastal Shipping Bill as Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was a “good man” who had replied “very peacefully”. Kumari Selja of the Congress, who was chairing the House, looked at the minister and said: “You are a good man.”

Roll Call

With the NDA receiving 288 votes on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Lok Sabha, six fewer than expected, an explanation is learnt to have been sought from the absent members. Two of them are from one state and the cabinet minister among the two told leaders that he was unwell. The other MP said she couldn’t reach on time before the lobby closed for voting, which took place late in the evening. The Opposition camp, meanwhile, was satisfied that it put together 232 votes against the Bill. The unity was also reflected in the number of amendments the Opposition pressed for voting.

Camera Before Action

In Parliament, it’s not enough to just raise issues but to also be seen doing so. On Thursday, Jagdambika Pal, who was chairing Lok Sabha, asked Congress’s Vijayakumar to speak, but the MP did not do so at once. Then, someone was heard saying: “Sir, (the) camera is not showing him”. Pal assured Vijayakumar that the camera would soon focus on him, but the Kanyakumari MP still appeared hesitant. Finally, as the screens on the walls of the chamber flashed his images, Vijayakumar began speaking about the RBI’s rule change on gold loans.

On A Lighter Note

Replying to a question about the Street Lighting National Programme in Lok Sabha Thursday, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal said Congress members are more concerned about darkness than light. He finished his reply with a “sher”, calling it “mann ki baat” of Congress. Speaker Om Birla immediately reminded the minister that “sher-o-shayari” is not done in Question Hour.
