Deepti Sharma alleges Rs 25 lakh fraud by UP Warriorz teammate: Report

Deepti Sharma alleges Rs 25 lakh fraud by UP Warriorz teammate: Report

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has reportedly accused fellow cricketer Arushi Goel of stealing valuables and committing financial fraud amounting to Rs 25 lakh. Arushi, a Delhi-based batter and junior clerk with Indian Railways, was formerly associated with Deepti at the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

According to a TOI report, Deepti claims that Arushi broke into her flat in Agra and made off with several valuable items, including gold and silver jewellery, as well as foreign currency worth Rs 2 lakh. The allegations were formally registered after Deepti`s brother, Sumit Sharma, lodged a police complaint at the Sadar Police Station in Agra.

“Deepti`s brother, Sumit Sharma, approached the Sadar police station with the complaint. Prima facie, we found some truth in the complaint and filed an FIR under BNS sections 305 (a) (theft), 331 (3) (house breaking), 316 (2) (criminal breach of trust) and 352 (insulting someone with the intent to provoke a breach of peace),” Assistant Commissioner of Police Sukanya Sharma was quoted as saying in the report.

It was further reported that Deepti and Arushi had developed a close bond over time, thanks to their professional ties in the WPL. However, things allegedly took a turn when Arushi and her family began soliciting financial help from Deepti under the pretext of medical emergencies and financial hardship.

“The two cricketers became close over the years through their association in the same team. Then, Arushi and her parents started exploiting Deepti financially, citing family emergencies and financial distress,” the report stated.

Confirming the developments, DCP Sonam Kumar informed news agency IANS, “Deepti Sharma, UP DSP and Indian women`s cricketer, along with junior player Arushi Goyal and her family, face a Rs 25 lakh fraud case. Deepti`s brother filed an FIR after valuables went missing from her flat. Investigation is ongoing.”

On the cricketing front, Deepti continues to remain an integral part of the Indian setup. She was recently named in India’s white-ball squads for the upcoming tour of England. The series comprises five T20 Internationals and three One Day Internationals.

The England tour is scheduled to begin with the first T20I at Nottingham, while the last T20I will take place in Birmingham on July 12. The ODI leg will begin on July 16 in Southampton and wrap up with the third match in Chester-le-Street on July 22. Meanwhile, Goel had been acquired by UP Warriorz for Rs 10 lakh ahead of the WPL 2025 season.
