Utkala Dibasa (Odisha Day) 2025: Utkala Dibasa, popularly known as Odisha Foundation Day, is a national observance marked by the people of Odisha on April 1 every year, celebrating the foundation of Odisha as an independent state in 1936. This year, it is being observed on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
Odisha, along with Bihar and Jharkhand, was a part of the Bengal Presidency before constituting an independent Indian state in 1936. In the early 20th century, the demand for an autonomous state for Odia speakers rose, which was largely driven by the desire to protect Odisha’s distinct language, culture, and identity.

Under the notable leadership of Madhusudan Das, Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, and Fakir Mohan Senapati, the idea of a separate province was eventually recognised by the British government, which established Odisha with independent administrative status and led to it becoming the first Indian state founded on linguistic principles, which today is remembered yearly as Odisha Foundation Day (Utkala Dibasa).
