Chennai Super Kings have unearthed a true diamond in Ayush Mhatre. Drafted in as a replacement for the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, the young opener has not only filled the void but has quickly established himself as a cornerstone of CSK’s batting order.
In a match where CSK needed early momentum, Mhatre unleashed a brutal assault on Gujarat Titans pacer Arshad Khan, dismantling him for a staggering 28 runs in a single over during their IPL 2025 league-stage clash in Ahmedabad on Sunday. This blitzkrieg wasn`t a fluke, it was calculated carnage.
#CaptainCool would be proud of that onslaught! 🤩#AyushMhatre smashes 28 runs off the 2nd over of the game. 💪

Starting the over with a brace, Mhatre shifted gears immediately, sending two towering sixes into the stands, followed by a fierce four, and then capping it off with another colossal maximum. Arshad, once considered a rising left-arm pace prospect, was rendered helpless against Mhatre’s unrelenting aggression.
This over marked the fifth-highest number of runs scored in a single over by a CSK batter in IPL history. Only Ravindra Jadeja (36 vs Harshal Patel, 2021), Suresh Raina, Dewald Brevis, and Albie Morkel (28 vs Virat Kohli) rank above or alongside him in this elite club.
What makes Mhatre’s rise even more compelling is his consistency and intent across games. Before the clash against Gujarat, he had already accumulated 206 runs with a top score of 94, all at an eye-popping strike rate of 187.27. Before his maiden IPL, in his debut first-class season, Mhatre, 17, scored 504 runs in nine matches with two centuries, besides having 458 runs under his belt from seven List A games. These aren’t just promising numbers; they are elite-level stats that indicate both control and explosive capability.
Mhatre has also been appointed captain of India’s U-19 squad for the upcoming England tour, as announced by the BCCI’s Junior Cricket Selection Committee last Thursday. The tour, which runs from June 24 to July 23, is packed with high-stakes contests designed to test both skill and temperament.
Under Mhatre’s captaincy, the young Indian contingent will play a 50-over warm-up game, a five-match Youth One-Day series, and two multi-day ‘Test-style’ matches against a strong England U-19 side. The ‘Boys in Blue’ will commence their campaign on June 24, setting the tone with a preparatory fixture that will allow the squad to acclimatize and sharpen their strategies. The official One-Day series kicks off on June 27, with the remaining matches scheduled for June 30, July 2, July 5, and July 7.
