Cricketing fraternity hails Rohit after Wankhede Stand named in his honour

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma received heartfelt tributes from his teammates after a stand has been named after him at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Rohit represents Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025. The Mumbai-based franchise shared a video on their official social media handle in which the cricketers were seen extending wishes to the 38-year-old.

Team India`s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav said, “What can I say about Rohit bhai? I`m really happy.” He further stated that when a currently performing player receives a stand in his name, it is a big achievement.

“When a currently performing cricketer has a stand to his name in the stadium, I think it`s a very big achievement,” he added.

Team India`s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah, too, expressed happiness on Rohit`s achievement.

“Hi Rohit, I just wanted to wish you. Congratulations,” Bumrah said in that video message. He added, “Having a stand after your name is a special feeling and yeah, best wishes for everything that lies ahead.”

MI`s captain Hardik Pandya wished Rohit success by saying it is a very big achievement. “Congrats RO! It`s a very, very big achievement to have your stand. You started your cricket journey here and eventually to have your name in the stand is an outstanding achievement. Lots of, lots of, lots of success to you and many, many congrats!”

Former Mumbai all-rounder and close friend Abhishek Nayar reminisced about their early days.

“Back in 2011, sitting on your couch at Karma, I wouldn`t have imagined that one day there will be a Rohit Sharma stand at Wankhede. I`m waiting to come back to the Wankhede and seeing the Rohit Sharma stand and getting some free tickets,” said Nayar.

Shreyas Iyer stated that he was lucky to be part of Rohit Sharma`s era and the 36-year-old cricketer stands as an inspiration to the youngsters. “You definitely know that all youngsters have been looking up to you and you have been an inspiration to all of us. Overall, it`s been great fun to play under you and I can proudly say that I was lucky enough to be part of your era,” said the Punjab Kings` skipper.

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, also plays domestic cricket for Mumbai, said, “I`m really excited to get plenty of success in the stand named after you.”

The newly named “Rohit Sharma Stand” at Wankhede is a fitting tribute to one of India`s most successful captains and batters, who began his cricketing journey in the very city that now honours him.

Recently, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. The right-hander concluded his Test career by playing 67 matches for India. He also scored 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries.

Earlier, the `Hitman` announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game after Team India`s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. The veteran is now left with just one format (One-Day Internationals) and is currently playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025.
