Container vessel Wan Hai 503 catches fire off Kerala coast

Following the sinking of ELSA3 off the Kerala coast last month, another container vessel is reported to be involved in a fire accident about 70 nautical miles off the Beypore coast on Monday, resulting in the loss of some containers into the sea.

The Singapore flagged ship Wan Hai 503 was reportedly carrying cargo from Colombo to Mumbai. The vessel sailed from Colombo and expected to reach Mumbai on Tuesday, informed sources said.

The incident occurred in the Arabian Sea approximately 40 km west of Beypore-Azhikode stretch. There are reports of an explosion and some crew members have suffered burn injuries. Around 22 crew members were on board and some people jumped into the sea. They are reported to be safe and are on life boats.

The Coast Guard and Indian Navy deployed rescue teams and rushed to the spot. At present, there are no reports of any causality and further details are awaited.

Kerala government has also directed respective district collectors in Kozhikode and Ernakulam to provide necessary treatment if the injured crew has been brought to the hospitals here.
