The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of two senior judges—Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi to the apex court. The proposal comes as the Supreme Court functions with two vacancies, short of its sanctioned strength of 34 judges. Justice Aradhe is the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and Justice Pancholi is the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

The recommendation was finalized by the Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, along with Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, J.K. Maheshwari, and B.V. Nagarathna. The names will now be forwarded to the Union Government for approval, following which the President will issue the formal warrants of appointment.

Justice Alok Aradhe began his judicial career as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in December 2009 and became a permanent judge in 2011. Over the years, he has served in multiple jurisdictions, including Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, and Telangana. He briefly acted as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in 2022 and later served as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court before assuming charge as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in January 2025.

Justice Vipul Manubhai Pancholi, currently the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, brings over three decades of legal experience. Born in Ahmedabad in 1968, he began his practice in 1991 at the Gujarat High Court, where he served as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor. Elevated to the bench in 2014, Justice Pancholi was confirmed as a permanent judge in 2016 and transferred to the Patna High Court in 2023. He was appointed as its Chief Justice earlier this year.

The Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation is expected to restore the court to its full strength, enhancing its capacity to address the growing backlog of cases. The final decision now rests with the government and the President’s office.
