India and UAE on Tuesday discussed launching joint projects to enhance overall defence capabilities in line with both countries’ shared interest in strengthening their strategic partnership.
During the meeting between Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of UAE, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also Crown Prince of Dubai, at the South Block, both the leaders acknowledged that defence cooperation needs to be scaled up to match the progress made in other areas such as trade and business, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
“The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in vital areas including defence industries, military training, skills development, and technology transfer. Officials also discussed launching joint projects to enhance overall defence capabilities in line with the countries’ shared interest in strengthening their strategic partnership,” the government of Dubai Media Office stated separately.
The industries from both countries in the past came together to explore partnerships for joint design and development of armaments.
For instance in February 2023, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and the UAE’s EDGE signed an MoU for the joint design and development of missile systems and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. EDGE also signed an MoU with Bharat Dynamics for joint production of Long-Range Precision-Guided Munition (LR-PGM) in India.
At the Tuesday’s bilateral meeting, both the Ministers were convinced that close collaboration between the defence industries should be an integral part of the bilateral cooperation.
The Ministry of Defence stated that they emphasised on increasing defence industry collaboration and discussed opportunities for enhancing partnership in defence manufacturing.
After the meeting, Rajnath Singh said in a post on X that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the UAE is of immense priority for India. “In the coming years, we are eager to work closely in areas such as defence cooperation, co-production and co-development projects, innovation and technology. Both India and the UAE are committed to work towards peace and prosperity in the region,” he added.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction on the active Coast Guard-to-Coast Guard cooperation and committed to further deepen it by formalising the same through an MoU, the MoD stated.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Rajnath Singh reviewed current geopolitical developments and shared views on the importance of promoting dialogue and diplomatic solutions to global conflicts, the UAE statement read.
They emphasised the need for sustained international cooperation to enhance stability and build the conditions necessary for sustained economic and social development, it added.
