
Mumbai recorded 778 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage modesty (molestation) in 2023, involving 781 complainants, making it the second highest among metropolitan cities, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
Delhi topped the list with 793 cases with 800 complaints, followed by Bengaluru (731 offences and 736 complainants), news agency PTI reported, citing the NCRB data.
In kidnapping and abduction cases, Mumbai was also second among metros, reporting 1,798 incidents with 1,841 victims. Delhi recorded the highest with 5,681 cases affecting 5,867 people.
In rape cases, Mumbai stood third with 387 incidents, while Delhi led with 1,088 cases, and Jaipur was second with 573 offences, PTI reported, citing the report.
With respect to murders, Mumbai ranked fourth among metropolitan cities, with 124 incidents and 125 victims. Delhi topped the list with 503 murders and 521 victims, followed by Bengaluru with 206 cases and Jaipur with 129 cases involving 131 victims.
Crime against children rises by 9.2 per cent in 2023: NCRB data
A total of 1,77,335 cases of crime against children were registered in India in 2023, marking a 9.2 per cent increase from 2022, the latest report from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed.
The data showed that the crime rate in 2023 stood at 39.9 per one-lakh child population, up from 36.6 in 2022. Three years ago, 1,62,449 cases were reported, while 1,49,404 cases were recorded in 2021.
“A total of 1,77,335 cases of crime against children were registered during 2023, showing an increase of 9.2 per cent over 2022 (1,62,449 cases),” the NCRB report said.
Among the major categories, “kidnapping and abduction of children” accounted for 79,884 cases (45 per cent), while cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act totalled 67,694 (38.2 per cent).
The data further revealed that 762 victims were below six years of age, 3,229 were between six and 12 years, 15,444 were between 12 and 16 years, and 21,411 were aged 16 to 18 years. The total number of child victims in 2023 stood at 40,846. Most were girls in rape-related sections.
Of the 40,434 cases, the offenders were known to the victims in 39,076, which included family members in 3,224 cases, family friends or neighbours or employers or other known persons in 15,146 cases, and friends or online friends or live-in partners on the pretext of marriage in 20,706 cases.
