Character.AI getting a new parental supervision-focused option

Character.AI was one of the first AI-powered chatbot services to take advantage of the artificial intelligence revolution driven by ChatGPT. However, over time, the platform has become less permissive with certain types of content. Now, Character.AI is receiving another feature focused on assisting parental supervision.

The changes to Character.AI have responded to parents’ concerns about their children’s use of the platform. Character.AI is quite popular among young people and has been since its launch. However, it was initially more permissive with content labeled as NSFW. It even received instructions from Apple and Google to set stricter filters. Now, the platform has stronger shields against sensitive content.

That said, there were still concerns about young people’s interactions with the characters. Character.AI has received complaints for allegedly displaying content related to self-harm. In some cases, parents of kids who died by suicide have linked the platform’s use to such tragedies. Thus, the company has been busy developing new parental control and content monitoring options.

Character.AI makes parental supervision easier with the new “Parental Insights” feature

In line with this, the platform is receiving the “Parental Insights” option. This feature allows Character.AI users to send their parents a report with key usage data, hoping it will help with parental supervision.

It’s not a complete report, as it doesn’t include the content of conversations. However, it does include some key parameters, such as average daily usage time (both on the web and the mobile app), the characters the young ones interact with the most, and a breakdown of chat time with each character.

This can help parents better monitor their children’s use of the platform. That said, there’s one drawback: the young person must enable the option. This may be a stumbling block, as many teens will likely not want to enable the option.

It’s notable that Character.AI doesn’t allow users under 13 in many countries. The platform is more stringent in Europe, only allowing users over 16. However, it’s quite easy to lie about your age during registration. Currently, the service doesn’t have a robust age verification service.

The firm claims it has redesigned Character.AI to address parental concerns. Some measures included moving users under 18 to an AI model trained to more strictly avoid “sensitive” outputs. Additionally, notifications reminding users that the characters aren’t real are now more prominent.
