Candidate of Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj joins BJP day before first polling

Candidate of Prashant Kishor led Jan Suraaj joins BJP day before

Jan Suraaj party’s candidate from the Munger Assembly constituency, Sanjay Singh, on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, a day before the first phase of polling in the Bihar elections, IANS reported.

Singh joined the BJP in the presence of the Hindutva party’s Munger candidate Kumar Pranay and pledged his support to the ruling National Democratic Alliance.

Speaking to reporters after joining the BJP, Singh said: “Considering the current political situation and circumstances, I am extending my support to ensure NDA’s victory. I will work to help them win, and I am confident they will win by a large margin of votes.”

His defection on the eve of polling reshaped the contest in the constituency, turning what was a triangular contest into a direct fight between the NDA and the Opposition Mahagathbandhan.

The Rashtriya Janata Dal has fielded Avinash Kumar Vidyarthi from the seat.

When asked about his decision to leave the Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj, Singh said the party’s vision was appealing but that it lacked the strong leadership required to bring about meaningful change.

This came after three Jan Suraaj candidates from Danapur, Brahmapur and Gopalganj withdrew their nominations in October.

Kishor had alleged at the time that the three leaders were “forced to withdraw” their nominations because of pressure from the BJP.

The polling in Bihar will be held in two phases on Thursday and Tuesday. The counting of votes will take place on November 14.
