Bureau of Indian Standards Releases New Anchor Design Framework

Hilti India hosted a digital event on April 25 to discuss the newly published standard for post-installed anchorage to concrete by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The standard provides a comprehensive design framework aimed at improving safety and reliability in India’s construction industry.

The new guidelines address critical gaps in anchor design that have previously led to connection failures. These standards are particularly significant as nearly 60% of India’s landmass is earthquake-prone, with 78% of the population living in moderate to high-risk seismic zones.

“The publication of the Indian Standard marks a pivotal moment for India’s construction industry, setting a new standard for safety and reliability,” said Jayant Kumar, General Manager and Managing Director of Hilti India.

The framework introduces testing protocols that align with seismic safety norms, ensuring anchors perform reliably under various conditions including cracked concrete and seismic activities. This is crucial for both structural and non-structural elements such as false ceilings, utility fixtures, and building facades.

Hilti India announced that its cloud-based anchor design software, PROFIS Engineering, has been updated to incorporate the new design methodology. The company will also conduct educational webinars and workshops to help industry professionals understand and implement the standard.

The need for advanced anchor solutions has increased with India’s rapid urban transformation through projects including high-speed rail, metro networks, and industrial expansions. The standard aims to ensure regulatory compliance, reliability, and consistency across these construction projects.

Hilti is a global provider of tools, fastening systems, and software solutions for the construction industry, operating in over 120 countries with approximately 33,000 team members. The company generated annual sales exceeding CHF 6.4 billion in 2024 and has been headquartered in Schaan, Liechtenstein since its founding in 1941.
