‘Book brigade’ form human chain in Michigan to help local bookstore move 9,100 titles: WATCH | Trending News

There’s something truly heartwarming about people coming together––not just to get a job done, but to genuinely enjoy the process. That’s what happened in the small town of Chelsea, Michigan, where some 300 locals turned up to help move nearly 9,100 books from one bookstore to another. They did it by forming a human chain that stretched down the block.

On a Sunday morning, neighbours, friends, and book lovers joined forces outside Serendipity Books, a cherished local store since 2017. When its owner Tanya Tuplin announced the shop was relocating just 350 feet away, many people asked how they could help. Tuplin said, “Everybody wanted to know what they could do,” and that spirit of generosity sparked an idea.

Inspired by a similar event she witnessed years ago, Tuplin decided to make a human chain to move the books. She spread the word via posters, flyers, and social media, according to The Washington Post. The response was overwhelming. Volunteers lined the sidewalk in two rows, stretching from the old location to the new one. One by one, books were passed along-each one handled with care and often accompanied by comments like, “I have not read this,” or “That’s a good one.”

Watch the video:

“It was a practical way to move the books, but it also was a way for everybody to have a part,” Tuplin said. And it was an efficient way as well. All the books were moved in under two hours. Even though boxing the books might have been faster, Tuplin said the human chain felt “right”. It brought connection, laughter, and a touch of magic to what could’ve been a regular chore.

Footage of the “book brigade” quickly went viral, with viewers from around the world touched by the spontaneous show of community spirit. One user commented, “Sometimes humanity is wonderful.” Another wrote, “Could we call it the book worm line?” A third user wrote, “This might be the best thing I have ever seen.”
