He also shared why he didn’t go ahead with it himself earlier. “It is not an easy film to do. We’ve to upscale it, modernize it, and make it today’s film.” Over the years, several names have been linked with the project. At one point, there was even an announcement of Chaalbaaz in London with Shraddha Kapoor in the lead, but that plan never saw the light of day. On the subject, Boney simply said, “I can’t comment on that.”

Interestingly, Janhvi wasn’t the only actress he once had in mind. “I know for sure that even at one point I was keen, in fact, I was keen to do it with Deepika (Padukone). But it didn’t materialize. So now there are people, and producers who are keen to do it with Janhvi,” he revealed. For now though, he feels it’s all “too premature” and added that he hasn’t even discussed it with Janhvi yet because of his travels.

The original Chaalbaaz, released in 1989, remains unforgettable. Directed by Pankaj Parashar, it featured Sridevi in one of her career-best performances as the timid Anju and the fearless Manju. With Rajinikanth and Sunny Deol by her side, the film became a massive hit and over the years has turned into a cult classic, celebrated for Sridevi’s unmatched comic timing and versatility.
