Bombay High Court allows Hindu organisation to felicitate Pragya Thakur

The Bombay High Court has given permission to a Hindu organisation to felicitate Pragya Singh Thakur, a key accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts, during a Gudi Padva event at Malegaon.

The order was passed on Friday by the Bench of Justice Ravindra Ghughe and Justice Ashwin Bhobe.

Petitioner Sakal Hindu Samaj sought permission to confer the Hindu Veer award on Thakur during the event, scheduled to be held on March 30, a day before Ramzan, between 7 am and 5 pm.

The High Court observed that after 78 years of freedom, there was every reason to believe that the population of this country was becoming literate and wisdom prevailed.

The Bench directed the speakers to ensure that their thoughts did not hurt the feelings people belonging to other religions.

Noting that the Court believed in the motto ‘live and let live,’ the High Court said it could not be overly sensitive in such matters and stressed on the need to uphold the freedom of expression.
