BJP Slams Telangana Govt for Inaction on Fatima Owaisi College Built on Lake Land

BJP

Hyderabad, July 8: Telangana BJP president N Ramachander Rao has strongly criticized the state government for its “double standards” in demolition drives, particularly pointing to the Fatima Owaisi Women’s College, run by AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi. He questioned why the government has spared the college—allegedly constructed within the Full Tank Level (FTL) of Salkam Cheruvu—while poor families living in the Musi river catchment area are facing eviction and demolition of their homes.

Speaking at a press meet on Monday at the BJP state office, Rao warned, “If the government doesn’t demolish the illegal college, the BJP will do it.” He demanded equal application of the law and accused the Congress-led Telangana government of shielding AIMIM leaders.

“The government says it can’t demolish the college, where 10,000 students are studying, but it has no problem demolishing the huts of poor people. Is this justice? Why one law for Akbaruddin Owaisi and another for the poor?” Rao asked.

HYDRAA Confirms Violation of FTL Norms

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) Commissioner AV Ranganath confirmed during a public interaction on X Spaces (formerly Twitter Spaces) on Sunday that the Fatima Owaisi College in Bandlaguda is built within the FTL of Suram Cheruvu (also known as Salkam Cheruvu).

“As per initial records and documents, the construction is clearly within the lake’s FTL. The final notice is awaited,” said Ranganath. However, no demolition action has been taken yet.

The college, run by a trust linked to AIMIM, has been providing education to thousands of students, many of them underprivileged and studying free of cost. “While we don’t look at the political angle, we do consider the social benefit. The college has educated thousands of Muslim students from KG to PG,” Ranganath noted.

BJP Prepares for Jubilee Hills Bypoll

Separately, Rao addressed the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election, stating that the BJP is ready for the challenge and confident of making significant gains. “We will form a full state committee within 25 days, representing all communities,” he said.

He also denied reports of infighting within the BJP, asserting that the party is united and focused on growth in Telangana. “We’re moving forward as one team, one ideology,” he concluded.

The controversy surrounding the Fatima Owaisi College comes amid heightened scrutiny over land use, lake encroachments, and selective enforcement of demolition laws in Telangana, especially in Hyderabad’s urban sprawl.
