Addressing a Mahagathbandhan rally in Muzaffarpur on Wednesday, Gandhi had said that Modi “can do anything for votes”.
He told the gathering: “If you tell Modi ji to do drama for votes, he would do. If you tell him that you would vote for him and ask him to come to the stage and dance, he would dance.”
In its complaint to the Election Commission, the BJP alleged that Gandhi had made “highly derogatory, indecent and personal remarks” about the prime minister.
“Such comments are personal, mocking and intended to insult the dignity of the highest constitutional office” of India, the complaint said.
It added that Gandhi’s remarks were “a direct attack on the personal character and dignity” of Modi and had “no connection whatsoever with public policy or performance”, ANI reported.
The party said the comments amounted to “personal vilification” and violated the model code of conduct, the news agency reported.
The code is a set of guidelines issued by the polls panel for political parties, candidates and governments to follow during an election. It sets guardrails for speeches, meetings, processions, election manifestos and other aspects of the polls.
The BJP demanded that the Election Commission issue a show-cause notice to Gandhi and direct him to make an unconditional public apology.
Responding to the complaint, Congress leader Pawan Khera accused the BJP of being “issueless”.
“Just imagine how issueless a party can be,” Khera told ANI. “They have no agenda, no report card, no vision for the Bihar elections, and yet they are making this an issue. A party whose prime minister uses words like ‘mujra’ has the guts to object to words like ‘dance’. What bigger joke could there be? Let them complain.”
During the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign in Bihar, Modi had said that the Opposition INDIA bloc was performing “mujra” for its vote bank.
