Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Manoj Kumar Oraon on Tuesday claimed that he was attacked by Trinamool Congress workers while distributing flood relief material in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district, PTI reported.
This came a day after the Hindutva party alleged that its Maldah Uttar MP Khagen Murmu and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh were chased and assaulted in Jalpaiguri while reviewing the flood damage in the region.
Several parts of North Bengal, including Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Darjeeling, have been flooded and seen landslides triggered by heavy rainfall over the past few days. At least 20 persons have been killed in rain-related incidents in Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
On Tuesday, Oraon claimed that workers from the ruling Trinamool Congress in the state attacked him and his supporters while they were distributing relief material among locals affected by the floods in Kumargram, the constituency he represents in the state Assembly.
“While trying to help flood-hit people, I was suddenly surrounded and attacked,” PTI quoted Oraon, who sustained injuries in the alleged attack, as saying.

The Trinamool Congress denied the allegations and described them as “baseless”.
“It was Manoj Oraon who had assaulted an aged man in his area first,” the news agency quoted an unidentified Trinamool Congress leader as saying.
The West Bengal unit of the BJP accused the Trinamool Congress of “terror politics” in the state.
“Whenever we stand beside flood-hit people in north Bengal, the TMC unleashes its rampage!” the party said on social media. “In [Chief Minister] Mamata Banerjee’s rule, even showing solidarity with people in distress has become a crime!”
The party also shared a video of the alleged attack on Oraon.
“The TMC does not understand the language of humanity, it only understands the politics of terror,” the BJP said, claiming that the ruling party in state was “busy spreading fear and violence” while the residents of northern Bengal wait for help amid the devastation caused by the floods.
“Trinamool’s politics means nothing but hooliganism, lies, and hatred,” it added.
On Monday, Murmu reportedly sustained serious injuries as his vehicle was ransacked by a mob of around 500 persons, who allegedly threw stones and attacked him and Ghosh with sticks.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had criticised the Trinamool government for its “pathetic” law and order situation. In response, Banerjee accused Modi of “politicising a natural disaster”.
