Bizarre incident involving world no 111 Harriet Dart

In a bizarre complaint during a tennis match, British number four Harriet Dart raised a stink about her opponent’s body odour and said the opponent needs to ‘wear deodorant’ during a round of 32 match in the Open de Roune, a WTA 250 event in France. Dart, who was facing French wild card Lois Boisson in the tournament on Tuesday, was heard making the comments about the French player during the match coverage and the conversation between her and the referee was caught on camera and reported by the media. Dart though would suffer a 0-6, 3-6 defeat in the match before she apologised for her comment. Boisson too got involved in a banter over social media about the incident.

“Can you tell her to wear deodorant? Because of the smell. Can you tell her to wear deodorant? She smells really bad,” Hart was heard telling the referee in the match broadcast as reported by The Independent. The British number four failed to convert any of the six break points in the match. Earlier, Hart had suffered a first round exit at the Charleston Open last month and the world number 111 singles player had come in the tournament after being part of the doubles team in the Great Britain team, which scored a 2-1 win over Germany in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers last week. Dart, a world number 62 in doubles, had paired up with Olivia Nicholls as they lost 4-6, 1-6 against Laura Siegemund and Anna-Lena Friedsam in the doubles match in the tie.
The 28-year-old later took to social media to apologise for her remarks. “I want to apologise for what I said on court today. It was a heat-of-the-moment comment that I truly regret. That’s not how I want to carry myself and I take full responsibility. I have a lot of respect for Lois and how she competed today. I’ll learn from this and move forward.” Dart posed on Instagram.

Minutes later, Boisson too made light of the incident and posted an edited photo on Instagram of her holding a deodorant and tagging cosmetics company Dove that they ‘apparently need a collab’.
