
A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus driver was booked by the Mumbai Police after a 21-year-old man was killed in an accident at Prabhadevi in central Mumbai, an official said on Saturday.
According to the police, the accident, involving a BEST bus, took place at around 8:30 pm on April 25 near the Decathlon Building on Appasaheb Marathe Road in Prabhadevi.
The BEST bus on route number 171, allegedly driven in a rash and negligent manner, struck the man who was later identified as Sarthak Suryakant Jangam, 21, a delivery executive. The impact caused him to fall on the road and he came under the wheels of the bus, resulting in severe head injuries leading to his death.
Following the incident, the NM Joshi Marg police has registered a case against the bus driver and further investigations in the matter are underway, said an official.
3-year-old girl mowed down by BEST Wetlease bus in Borivali
In an another incident, earlier this month, a three-year-old girl was on April 7 afternoon allegedly mowed down by a BEST Wetlease bus in Borivali area of Mumbai, the officials had earlier said.
According to an official statement from the BEST`s Command & Control Centre (Traffic) on April 7, the accident involved a BEST Wetlease bus operating on route A-301, near Rajendra Nagar in Borivali.
The incident took place at around 12:40 pm when a three-year-old girl was struck by the front left tyre of the bus, resulting in fatal injuries, the officials said.
The statement had said that the bus, operating from the Magathane Depot under the Wetlease of Daga Group, was en route from Borivali station (East) back to the Magathane Depot when the accident took place.
The bus driver behind the wheel, with the bus operating as a one-man service (there was no conductor on board), the officials said.
The victim was identified as 3-year-old Mehak Khatun Shaikh was walking on the roadside when she allegedly ran into the path of the moving bus, the officials had earlier said.
The vehicle struck the child, and the left front tyre ran over her causing fatal injuries, they had said.
The local police rushed to the spot following the accident and shifted the child to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali where she was declared dead before admission by the doctors at around 1:15 pm, they said.
