Women are portrayed well in MB’s films
Surprisingly, Madhur hasn’t seen any of Regena’s earlier work before casting her. But giving us backstory on how she came on board, the actress states that the director’s team reached out to her. “MB (Madhur Bhandarkar) and I met in Mumbai; had a great conversation and we both got on like a house of fire. He trusted my work, and we sealed it,” shares Regena, adding that she’s perhaps the first actor to come on board the film ever since it materialised. When Regena learnt about the opportunity to be part of Madhur’s film, she was very excited. She says that women are portrayed well in MB’s films. “I have seen many of his previous films and what fascinates me about his films is his honesty in storytelling. The kind of films he does are realistic. There won’t be any half measures, but he wanted to execute it with conviction.”

Creative and artistic freedom
The actress finds working with the director a ‘fun experience.’ With most of the Hindi films being shot in sync sound (live recording), Regena, being a South girl, shares that the director gave her the required space to be at ease. “He gave me the creative and artistic freedom so that I can focus on acting and performing. He asked me not to worry about the accent or diction of the language (Hindi), and that made things easy for me. His energy on the sets is infectious, and as a director, to bring out such energy is a skill and not too many filmmakers can do that. In fact, being on his sets all the actors feel like a party.”

When asked about her role in the film, Regena is tight-lipped. But when quizzed whether she’s consciously looking to make inroads into the Hindi film industry, the actress replies that she never planned anything. “When I wanted to explore different avenues, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga came to me, so most of my work happened organically. Just like how I balanced my career in the South by doing films in Telugu and Tamil. So, now I am adding Hindi industry to my repertoire,” shares Regena, acknowledging that it is challenging to juggle between multiple industries. She adds, “But in a way it keeps me on my team and pushes me.”
Navigating different industries
Having worked in multiple industries, Regena states that the process of navigating through was challenging initially. Stating that the filmmaking process is pretty much the same in all the industries, the actress adds that culturally, you need to adapt to a few things. “Working in multiple industries has been a liberating experience. Interacting with people from various walks of life made me understand and learn new cultures. Be it food, practices and traditions, I learnt a lot by working in several industries,” says Regina, adding that films also introduce you to new cultures.
20 years in the industry
Come this November, Regena completes 20 years in the film industry. For someone who is considered an ‘outsider’ and never had any godfather, the actress shares that two decades in the industry feels surreal. “The other day when one of my staff members was talking about it, and I thought, yes, we need to acknowledge this journey. I think because of my staff, I could come this far. And when someone mentioned about my 20 years journey on X, I sent that screenshot to my mother, it was my way of expressing things to her,” says Regina further adding, “It’s been a satisfying journey.”

Was never camera shy
Talking about her journey, it takes her down the memory lane. At 14 while many of her age were in the school, Regena was on a film set. The actress claims she still remembers her first shot. She was sitting on a chair and being pampered by everyone around on the sets of the Tamil film Kanda Naal Mudhal. “I can still recall it was chaotic on the sets. Actress Laila asked me whether I was nervous, but I said I was not. I am excited, and was hoping that I remember my lines,” she recalls. Regena wasn’t camera shy, and being on the film sets was normal because she had earlier faced the camera, as a compere in a television channel, and also in several ad commercials. She says, “So, I knew what a film set would be like. But growing up the attention span was very less. I would get distracted very easily, and my school progress card says that I am a good girl with nice academics but there’s a lapse in concentration.” She always finds peace between ‘action and cut’ on the film sets. She adds, “I realized that my maximum concentration and energy lies between ‘action and cut,’ and so my concentration is high and I am at my best on a film set. I grew and evolved as an actress to understand that the amount of time I spend on the sets gives me that sense of calmness.”
